Thanks to the Philippine program The Probe Team, we learn a lot more about Charice and how her life experience helped her be where she is now.
At 0:42, her Mommy Raquel relates how Charice took it upon herself to help the family financially. First by saving her mother from the shame of asking for money from others by volunteering to go and ask for some money herself - either to family or friends - as well as in joining singing contests.
It was when Mommy Raquel said to Charice and her brother that "I have to return you to your father because I have no job and cannot support you anymore." that Charice again stepped up by saying, "No mommy. Just enter me in singing contests. We'll get by."
At 1:15, Charice also recalls a bittersweet experience which seemed to foresee the continuous blessings she is set to receive.
Charice relates how she won P3,000 ($60) in a singing contest. An amount just perfect for her family to pay a few debts and buy food. Unfortunately, the amount was stolen. Mommy Raquel cried and so did Charice and her little brother. Every inch the courageous little diva, Charice struggled to be unfazed by the setback and immediately asked her mom to look for any singing contest she could join on that same day.
They were able to find one in Batangas and so had to borrow P1,000 ($50) - an amount just enough for them to go to Batangas but not enough (if Charice looses) to get back home.
But lo and behold, Charice gets teary-eyed in 1: 49 when she tells how she won the contest in Batangas and win more than the amount she lost: P8,000 ($160).
Charice's loss in ABS-CBN's Little Big Star contest - where Charice at 7:30 said she gave it her all while singing her song piece and even made sure every lyric she uttered she directly sang to and for the judges of the contest - proved to be her biggest setback as she cried her heart out for earning a mere 3rd place. It was also at that moment when she gave up and decided to focus her energy on her studies and not anymore sing.
